Doctor Strange

A stunning painting of Doctor Strange by artist Donato Giancola (I think).

The Woking Tripod

Woking is a burrough in the southeastern English county of Surrey. It is also the first place the invading Martians land in the H.G. Wells classic War of the Worlds.
To celebrate this momentous part of science fiction history, a large replica/statue of the Martian Tripod (as envisioned by author Wells) was erected in the town square in 1998 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the novel.
Standing 23 feet tall, the awesome sculpture/statue was designed and constructed by Michael Condron. Pictures probably can't do it justice but it does look phenomenal!

Nightfall!

A little something different here at Xemnu's abode on the web.
As some of you may have guessed, my interests are wide and varied. One of these curious pastimes I enjoy is old time radio (or OTR for short). Specifically science fiction and horror anthology radio programs like Arch Oboler's Light's Out, X-Minus-1 and the particular gem we're going to discuss today...Nightfall.
By most OTR standards Nightfall is not that old. Nightfall broadcast on the CBC from 1980 to 1983 and even though this is a rather short run for an OTR series, it is particularly notable for the themes and atmosphere. Fondly remembered (rightfully so) as being one of the most popular of CBC programs and also one of the most terrifying radio shows to ever broadcast, episodes are somewhat scarce and difficult to come by. Unless, of course you peruse the internet archive.
Naturally, I've wanted to feature this here because of my love of horror and OTR. Please, if you enjoy what you are about to hear certainly visit this website for a more detailed history of the program.
If you've never listened to OTR before I encourage you to at least give this a try. I would go so far as to turn out the lights and listen in the dark, actually. Even creepier that way.
For now, though, listen and let your blood run cold. It is...Nightfall!

The Wonderful Women of Hammer Horror

Oh, lordy lordy! What a wonderful time the 1960's and early 1970's were for horror-philes! The big, big player in all this was the wonderful British film studio Hammer Films. And oh, how many times did Christopher Lee or Peter Cushing encounter a lovely, buxom, scantily-clad young beauty in distress? Or, for that matter, with fangs?
To celebrate, ruminate and generally reminisce here at the Xemnu blog, I've gathered some samples of the finest beautiful starlets from those glorious gory days of yore. A feast for the eyes to be sure!

If these images proved...heh heh heh...titillating for you, I highly recommend the recently published photo-book Hammer Glamour and the Hammer Glamour 2012 Calendar. You can...heh heh heh...fang me later!

The Thief and the Cobbler

Today at Xemnu's abode, we begin a 3-part animation odyssey.
If you've never seen the animated classic The Thief and the Cobbler, you are missing out. Unfortunately there is a long history behind this movie and it's convoluted path to the large screen.
The brainchild and masterpiece of animator Richard Williams, the movie took nearly 31 years to complete. Williams began work on the film in 1964 and it languished in and out of production for nearly two decades. Until...
The success of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Williams' success as an animation director on the Oscar-winning live-action/animation milestone garnered the attention of Warner Bros. films. Unfortunately for Williams, Disney's Aladdin was seen as a threat. Under tight deadline, Williams was unable to finish production on time. Warner's pulled out, the Completion Bond Company took control and the rest is a mish-mosh of a horribly re-cut animation masterpiece. Until...
The unofficial fan restoration, The Thief and the Cobbler: the Recobbled Cut. Industrious and hard working fans re-cut the film to a close facsimile of the original workprint of the movie.
Now, thanks to YouTube and a group of dedicated fans, Xemnu presents: The Recobbled Cut. Enjoy!
